Tight Ends Coach T.C. McCartney (7.30.22)
On how the offseason and training camp with the TEs is going thus far:
“It has been good. I have really been in this system a long time and then I have been in the different rooms, whether it was receivers in San Francisco or the O line in San Francisco, so I have been in this system a long time so it is pretty easy for me so far.”
On expectations for TE David Njoku:
“He has made a lot of progress since I have been here when I got here in 2020. In this offense, we ask him to do a lot. We ask him in pass protection, running downfield, running routes and then the run game and a bunch of different kinds of runs and a bunch of different schemes. I expect him to take the next step in all of those things really. He wants to be a great player, and I am here to help him try and do that.”
On if Njoku has only hit the tip of the iceberg in terms of playmaking ability:
“Definitely. He has all of the ability in the world. We all see that. Then it comes down to opportunities and taking advantage of those opportunities. I think we will have a good chance this year to give him a chance to do that.”
On if TEs can help carry the load to start training camp and season, given the number of young WRs on the team:
“I think in this offense, we always have to be ready for that. We get moved around a lot. We could wear a bunch of different hats. Like I said, just pass protection, running routes and run game so I think definitely in our room, we feel that way.”
On TE Harrison Bryant:
“Harrison, the production probably is not what anybody wanted the last two years, but if you watch our tape, he has been a very good player for us since he got here. He does a lot of things that do not show up on the stat sheet necessarily, but we expect him to take the next step, as well.”
