S John Johnson III (11.14.22)

On if he was surprised by the team’s performance coming off the bye week:

“Coming off a bye week, you are rested. Got an extra couple days to prepare. I would say no, I didn’t expect that, but this is the NFL. Any given Sunday, you can go out there and not execute. They get paid, too. It is a tough one.”

On if Browns players are asking themselves the tough self-scout questions and being introspective about mistakes and areas to improve after yesterday’s result:

“I think so. We come in the week with a gameplan, and we have to execute at a high level each and every week. That is what is asked of us as players. If it takes it to a personal level with individual guys looking at their performances and how they are doing and if they are doing their job at a high level, that is what it takes. I think at this point in time at this point of the year, that is what is going to have to happen. Guys have to really lock in, look at themselves in the mirror and see if they are executing at a high level.”

On inconsistency on defense and the challenge making corrections in order to be consistent:

“I think it is just getting experience and getting reps under your belt. Each week presents different challenges, and you kind of have to learn how to morph as a defense. Some weeks, it is going to be heavy pass. Some weeks, it is going to be heavy run. Obviously, we put some stuff out there on tape that is going to keep popping up. I think each week you have to learn how to morph and adjust. I think we have not really hit that point where we can understand that fully. If we don’t, it is just going to keep happening. I think we just have to learn how to adapt to what is happening throughout the game and at halftime make adjustments. It might take a guy who is not necessarily a run stopper to become a run stopper. It might take a guy who is not necessarily in pass coverage to have to drop in coverage. That is the nature of the game. I think until then, we are going to keep having these problems.”

On if there have been other Browns players stepping up to create a good locker room culture despite tough losses:

“Yeah, I think we are still hanging in tight. There hasn’t been any bickering or anything like that. I think definitely we have to look ourselves in the mirror as a group and right the ship and get this thing going. We are running out of time. I think we are past the midway point now so it is time to step it up.”
