Run Game Coordinator/Running Backs Coach Stump Mitchell

On RB Jerome Ford’s performance in the first preseason game:

“I thought he did some good things. We cannot turn the ball over, which is one thing we did, but he had some big plays for us. The scouting department knew he could play. I think we got a good guy, especially the round in which we got him.”

On the teaching point on Ford’s fumble:

“Have to put two hands on it. In traffic, you have to put two hands on it. I think that would have prevented it.”

On the biggest indicator that Ford can perform in pass protection and picking up blitzes:

“We have seen doing the pass protection drills that we have that he can pick up a blitz. I like what I see.”

On if he talked to RB Kareem Hunt about his situation when not participating in all team drills for a period of time:

“No, that is his business. I do not have anything to do with it. That is all I have to say about that.”

On if Ford’s skillset resembles Hunt’s more than RB Nick Chubb’s and if Ford can become a third-down back:

“I think so. He has more speed than Kareem, but yeah, he can catch the ball, he can run routes and he can do it all. He can do it all – first, second and third down, he can do it all.”

On balancing RB reps with depth in the room:

“COVID the last couple of years has handled that for us, unfortunately. The more talent we have, the better it is. (RB) D’Ernest (Johnson) last year against, I think it may have been Green Bay, had to come out late because we had some guys out. Unfortunately, guys get hurt. You just can’t have enough good players at any position.”
