Quarterbacks Coach Drew Petzing (9.9.22)

On QB Jacoby Brissett’s preparation prior to Week 1:

“I think it has been great. He is a pro. He has done this for a long time. He has been around a lot of great coaches and a lot of great players. It has been fun to be a part of his process and to try to help him in that process. He is very diligent in his preparation and works extremely hard on it so it has been a good week.”

On what makes Brissett a good fit for the Browns offense:

“I think a lot of it is the decision making. I think he sees the field well. I think he knows where to go with the ball. He knows what the defense is trying to do. He understands our offense from a, ‘Hey, this is why we are calling that play,’ or ‘This is why we are trying to do that.’ He really plays well within the confines of the offense, which I think really helps us operate.”

On the decision to have three QBs on the active roster and one on the practice squad:

“That one is a little bit above my head. I think my job is to make them all capable. I tell those guys at the beginning of training camp my goal is for everybody on this active roster and playing in this league for a long time. I do not know exactly when it was the final decision to keep two, three or four, but certainly, that is my goal is to always make those guys feel like they are ready to play when we start and go through camp.”

On if people can expect excitement with the Browns offense this season, including WR Amari Cooper’s comment of hopes to see fireworks this season:

“Yeah, I think anytime you start the season, you get excited, right? To see what you have, how good you are going to be, what you need to work on and what you are already good at. I would say our No. 1 goal is to score one more point than the other team. If that is fireworks to do it or if that is five points to do it, I will take it. Certainly, excited about the guys we have in the room and looking forward to seeing them go play on Sunday.”

On QB Kellen Mond:

“I think he fits really well in the room. He has a great personality. I think football is really important to him. He came in right away and started to learn the playbook. You know it is funny, he has been in systems that are very similar to ours from a language perspective so I think that has sped up his learning curve a little bit. He has been able to jump into more of it than just kind of the basics that you would expect from a guy who is coming in at that point. He has been great to work with.”
