QB Jacoby Brissett (11.23.22)

On his mindset entering what might be his final start of the 2022 season:

“Go out there and try to win the game.”

On if he treats this game any differently or just like any other one since it may be his final start of the 2022 season:

“Another game. Just trying to go out there, play good football and try and get a win.”

On the Browns’ struggles with the run game during the past two weeks:

“I think it just comes down to our execution. Obviously, it is an emphasis on that this week. Obviously, after what we did last week – that is all of us, all 11 of us out there – just execution.

On why the Browns did not execute as usual in the run game the past two weeks:

“Every week is different. Obviously, hit a lull in our execution in the run game. Just doing a better job of that. Obviously, focusing on that this week.”

On if he believed Buccaneers QB Tom Brady would still be playing in 2022 when he was the backup Patriots QB in 2016:

“No, I would not think he would be playing right now but not surprised that he is.”

On takeaways from playing with Brady:

“One, the surprise that I shouldn’t be surprised that he is still playing right now. Just the best to ever do it. Player wise, teammate wise, his love and passion for the game, his understanding of football and his competitive nature, just there are so many things I can say about him.”

On Brady being one of the greatest teammates ever:

“Because everybody looks at him as Tom Brady, and he doesn’t think he is Tom Brady, I would say. I know form the first day I met him he has been the same guy. Honestly, held me to a higher standard than I probably held myself in the beginning of my career. Just so many things I can say about him.”

On how amazing it is that Brady leads the league in completions and attempts at 45 years old:

“Like I said, it is no surprise. Obviously, being in the room with him, getting an understanding of football from him and learning from him, like I said, his competitive nature is what drives him. He clearly wants to do whatever it takes for him to get a win. Yeah, no surprise.”

On if it would mean more to win this week opposite of Brady in what is potentially his final start of the 2022 season:

“You guys have to stop saying the last start thing. I just want to win. I don’t care who it is against. Fortunately, it can be him. Just looking forward to it.”

On if he is proud of how he has handled the opportunity to start and his performance during the first 11 games of the season:

“That is so funny because people ask you, and it is like, ‘Well am I not supposed to do that?’ That is what I signed up for. I don’t think I should be commended on doing my job and doing what I am supposed to do and what I told myself and everybody else that I was going to do. I am doing my job, but just obviously wish we won more games. We have an opportunity to do that this week, and I am looking forward to that.”

On if the Browns’ 3-7 record reflects his performance, given some individuals don’t believe wins and losses should be tracked as a starting QB’s statistic:

“I don’t know. That is not for me to decide. I just go out there and just try to win. I don’t care how it looks. I just want to go win. I will let the other people figure that other stuff out.”

On balancing his individual performance with the team’s record, including last week’s loss:

“I still think there were opportunities left out there on the field. Putting the ball on the ground on a dropped snap. Just stuff like that. Being in the red zone four times and I think we only scored twice. There were things I could have done better obviously so I think those are just my takeaways from the game.”

On evaluating his performance this year, given he has a strong QB rating but the team is 3-7:

“I have one more so ask me next week and then I will be able to give you a better answer about that.”

On how his experience as starting QB played out compared to expectations when signing with the Browns and the unique situations it presented:

“Obviously, I envisioned us winning more games, but we didn’t and we haven’t so far. Like I said, we have another opportunity to go out there and get a win this week. I signed up for this. I knew what I was getting myself into. I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy task. I didn’t sign up for easy. I wasn’t brought here for easy, and I knew I was the right person for it. I still believe that I am. I think I have shown that. Excited for this one.”

On if he proved something to himself this year as it relates to setting the stage for the next chapter of his NFL career:

“I haven’t really had a chance to think about that really. I remember saying this at the beginning of the year, this has been a journey that I have had to take week by week and just being present in this moment because I don’t know what is ahead. I have been fortunate enough to be around this league a long time to know that a lot of crazy things happen. I haven’t really thought about the future yet. I honestly don’t want to right now because of how much this week means to me. I am just looking forward to this week.”

On if believes he has shown this season that he is a starting-caliber NFL QB:

“For sure. Definitely. Like I said, that is why I was brought here is because the Browns understood that, too. Yeah, I think I went out and proved myself right.”

On if he wants to return to the Browns:

“I can’t answer that question (laughter). No disrespect, I am not answering that question.”

On reflecting on being emotional following the Week 1 win at Carolina and if he made the most of the opportunities presented for him while serving as the starting QB:

“Those emotions were an accumulation of a lot of things – obviously, the opportunity but a lot of other things, too. Like I said, that will be a question I have to answer next week when I get a chance to reflect on whatever this has been. It is hard for me to look back right now because I am here today.”

On the Buccaneers defense despite some struggles by Tampa Bay overall this season:

“Still a really good defense. Not really giving up a lot of points. Guys who have been in that system and understand that system who have played with each other a long time so they understand each other’s responsibilities on each play. I think (Buccaneers Head Coach) Todd (Bowles) is doing a really good job with those guys as far as they have had some injuries in certain spots that  those guys have filled in and played well. I think they are a really good defense.”

On belief in the Browns locker room that the team can still make the playoffs:

“We still have games left. The season isn’t over. We still have a job to do. You just worry about one week at a time. Whatever happens, happens. Like I said, there are more games and more season to be played.”

On C Ethan Pocic being placed on injured reserve and the opportunity to iron out details with G Hjalte Froholdt at C this week in practice:

“Obviously, Po was playing really well. Definitely tough to lose him. Hjalte on short notice came in and played well. I think we kind of ironed out a lot of those issues during the game. Obviously, a week of preparation with him, we’ll be fine.”

On learning from Brady during their time together and if it was from watching Brady or spending one-on-one time with Brady:

“It was a mixture of both. I was that kid who was annoying as hell and kind of just wherever he went, I tried to follow the places that I could go and just trying to get as much information. Even during games, just talking to him about stuff that he saw on certain things. Obviously, not all of the time because the game is a little different. I was one of those guys who kind of tried to be a sponge.”

On if Brady ever told him ‘leave me alone, I have a game to worry about’:

“He probably did (laughter), but I probably still said something to him (laughter).”
