CB Denzel Ward (11.21.22)

On if there has been an emphasis on fixing miscommunication and creating a better understanding and execution of assignments:

“Definitely, I definitely felt that. I think that is definitely an emphasis that we need to focus on going forward.”

On how to correct those issues:

“I think it takes everybody. The guys going and getting into the playbook but also just having that communication with the coaches and players on what is the assignment and what we are supposed to be doing and how to execute it. I think it is just that back-and-forth communication that we need to do and guys going out and executing it.”

On if defensive coordinator Joe Woods’ defensive scheme is too complicated for Browns players to grasp and execute:

“No, I don’t think so. Not at all. I feel it is the same defense as last year, and I felt that we did well last year. It is a good defense. Like I said, we just have to get everybody on the same page, buy into it and find a way to get our jobs done and execute. To answer your question, though, I don’t think it is too much. I don’t think the defense is too much.”

On if the struggles on defense are more frustrating given the system has been in place for multiple years and the number of returning players:

“It is frustrating because we are 3-7. We are not exactly where we had hoped for or planned to be. We just have to try to find a way to execute, learn what we are supposed to learn and find a way to win a game – win a game and play a full 60-minute game.”

On clarifying if Browns players understand the scheme, plays called and their assignments:

“I can’t speak for everybody. Like I said, we just have to all get on the same page and I think have that communication with the players and coaches and get on the same page. Just make sure everybody knows what they are supposed to do, their job and assignment and execute it from the best of our ability and go from there.”
