CB Greg Newsome II (10.28.22)
On the Browns defenses changes with Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase not playing:
“The only thing I would say changes is obviously that is their No. 1 target. Now, they are going to have to put more emphasis on (WR) Tee Higgins and (WR) Tyler Boyd. At the same time, those are all great receivers anyways. It is not really going to change anything for us because at the end of the day, they are all three great receivers. It is not going to change too much.”
On his reaction when learning Chase would not play this week:
“I was pissed for sure. I definitely was looking forward to that matchup. Hopefully, he gets well soon. I was definitely mad.”
On if part of his frustration with not having the opportunity to compete with Chase was due to Chase’s comments this past offseason:
“No. That is just going to be like a rivalry that is going to be every single year. That stuff is all noise. It is always great to go against a really talented receiver. I look forward to those matchups so I was definitely upset.”
On if he felt disrespected by Chase’s comments this past offseason:
“Not really. At the end of the day, whether he thinks I am elite, it only matters what I think about myself. No, I didn’t feel too disrespected. I was just ready to prove it again this season. We will get him next time.”
On Boyd’s and Higgins’ strengths:
“I think Boyd is the best route runner out of the three. He runs great routes. He is the slot guy so he gets a lot of targets inside. A great third-down type of guy. He is one of those guys when you always gameplan Higgins and Chase, he seems to go off every single time so that is a guy you definitely have to stay on. With Tee Higgins, he is a deep threat because of his length. He catches contested balls and can still run really good routes. They have a great combination over there of really talented guys who can do different things.”
