Offensive coaching assistant Ryan Cordell (12.10.21)

On his opportunity to coach the Browns RBs while run game coordinator/running backs coach Stump Mitchell was unavailable:

“As a young coach, you are always kind of looking forward to the time when you get to run a room. For me, when I went into it and talked to Stump, going into it I said to him, ‘We are trying to extend the standard you have created in this room.’ They have done a great job here during his time with the backs we have of being some of the best and being elite in this league. I really just told him my promise to him was to try and keep that going. It has been a great opportunity to be a part of that and kind of help progress that.”

On how often he speaks with Mitchell:

“I talk pretty regularly with him. He is a ball coach. It is hard to get him away from football. We talk pretty often. Really just going through, checking in on him, checking in on each other and then what is going on on the field, off the field and things like that. It has been great building that relationship and continuing that relationship we have.”

On how Mitchell is doing:

“He is doing well. It has been good. Like I said, he is all about the ball.”

On taking over the Brown RBs room with arguably the best tandem in the NFL in RBs Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt:

“It has been good. It is a great room, both from a talent standpoint and also just who the people are in that room. It has been really good to work with therm. Obviously, you get into a room like that, and we want to keep doing what they have been able to do. You get in there and see the work ethic they have, and you see really what they have produced in this league and how they go about it to get to those results. It has been awesome to be a part of it and be more active in that process with them.”

On his coaching versatility after filling in for offensive line coach Bill Callahan last season due to COVID-19 protocols:

“In the NFL, it is always you talk about next man up, and a lot of times we refer to it with players. In reality what we have learned over the past few years, you have to be able to do that with everything. For me, one of my goals is I come up in football is to learn it all and to be able to understand the different parts of the team and the different parts of the offense. It has been great to live that out a little bit in terms of being in these different rooms. I really owe a lot of the opportunity to the staff around me, the Head Coach (Kevin Stefanski) to AB (Executive Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager Andrew Berry) and to the Haslams to let me have these opportunities to really jump in and help out where I can and be that next man up.”
