WR Jarvis Landry, DT Sheldon Richardson, C JC Tretter and DE Olivier Vernon (9.13.19)
Included below are select quotes from interviews with the following Browns players during today’s media availability:
- WR Jarvis Landry
- DT Sheldon Richardson
- C JC Tretter
- DE Olivier Vernon
WR Jarvis Landry:
On Titans CB Malcolm Butler’s comments about the Browns not having any heart:
“It was just kind of what I said. I know the guys that are in the building. I know the guys that I go to work with every day and how hard we work.”
On the kind of dig it is for Butler to make those comments after the game:
“It is definitely [a dig] for somebody to say that. It definitely kind of like took me by surprise for a second. At the same time, opponents are willing to say anything. You just kind of have to take it for what it is. In that matter, I know the guys here. I know that everybody is going to play until four quarters, 0:00 on the clock and the winner is decided. That was kind of my answer to it.”
On if Butler was mainly focused on the bad fourth quarter when he said his comments:
“That happened before happened. Right before halftime, going in, that is when he said it.”
On NY Jets Head Coach Adam Gase joking about trading players from the Dolphins to the Browns when Gase and Landry were in Miami:
“Yeah, I do remember that. I am happy to be here. I am grateful to be here and blessed to be a part of this organization. I will just leave it at that.”
DT Sheldon Richardson:
On how the Browns responded this week:
“We responded well in practice. Our adjustments that I feel like we made, we corrected it and continuing to get better. Just have to be a smart football club. That is it. Play complementary football. Play off each other like we have to.”
On if it can be tough to balance being a smart and a tough football team:
“You can be smarter. You can be smarter. It is not that difficult.”
On what makes NY Jets RB Le’Veon Bell a challenge:
“Versatile back. Receiver guy, too. Knows how to read holes. Great vision. Stout runner. Always running over his feet, never falling backwards. That is what you want in an NFL running back.”
On if the Browns have to be alert for screens after the Titans had success with them last week:
“Yeah, definitely have. Just have to make sure we are on our Ps and Qs. That is about it, really. Reaction drills.”
On what Titans did well with scheme and execution to neutralize the Browns DL or if the Browns DL dominated the way it wanted to:
“No, we did not dominate because we did not win the game. No, we did not dominate. Big play here and there but not too many. For the most part, we did a pretty good job when we actually played football. Other than that, we gave them pretty much everything, but kudos to them.”
C JC Tretter:
On playing on Monday Night Football:
“It is always an exciting game. It is something you grew up watching on TV. It is a primetime game so it is a lot of eyes. Your family and friends who you grew up with are going to be watching you play, and it is great opportunity and exciting.”
On his favorite memory of Monday Night Football, whether it is playing or watching:
“The one that always stands out being a Vikings fan growing up is the Antonio Freeman catch on Monday night. Not a good memory, but that is one. I remember staying up for that game, and it took me a while to fall asleep. It was disappointing night in the Tretter household.”
On how the Browns OL will handle the blitzing from NY Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams:
“He is an aggressive play caller so we know it is going to be coming. We know and it does not really matter. It is not really a wait until third down thing, and it is a he is going to bring it whenever he feels like bringing it. A lot of that is film work, studying and making sure as an offensive line unit and a protection unit, backs, tight ends and quarterbacks included. We are all on the same page of picking things up and who we are going to. Especially being a road game, communication is going to be a big part of it and making sure everyone can understand where we are going, what we are doing and how we are getting there.”
On if he has seen an improvement in QB Baker Mayfield’s ability to recognize blitzes in Year 2 and if Mayfield relishes opportunities when opponents blitz him:
“Yeah, absolutely. That is where quarterbacks make their hay is having a team try to come after them, getting out of it and making them into regular looks and being able to do what they want. You can beat a blitz, whether it is getting us into the right protection, blocking it up, having time to throw it down or finding your hot throw and getting the ball out and making them regret bringing an extra guy. That is how you win in this league.”
DE Olivier Vernon:
On New York:
“I spent three years over there. Hey, back at it again. I knew it was going to be sometime that I was going to have to play in that stadium. At the end of the day, it is football.”
On if it will be strange walking into MetLife Stadium:
“Not really. I have played on the opposite side when I was there when I was in Miami. Nothing too different.”
On if it bugged him at all that he did not get a tackle or sack last week:
“Of course, you want to make plays and things like that, but give credit to the Tennessee Titans. They had a good gameplan. They got up on the scoreboard so they were able to control the game. They were able to do what they wanted to do as far as just not letting us get back there and not giving us time to rush the passer.”
On if he expects other teams to copy what the Titans did:
“We just can’t do things that are going to beat ourselves. Just go in the game and limit the amount of penalties, and I think we will be alright.”
