TE David Njoku (10.20.23)
How did it feel to have Deshaun (Watson) back out there? Full reps…
“Felt good. He’s looking really good. So, we’re excited.”
How are you doing? How do you feel?
“I feel great. Do I not look great or what are you saying?”
No, I’m sincerely asking if you’re doing okay. You look great.
“Thank you for asking. Thank you.”
What are some of the challenges the Colts defense presents for you guys as a unit?
“They’re a very smart defense, and they play in unison, so it’s a great challenge for us. And we’re really excited for this game.”
Is the zone element of their defense change things for you guys at all?
“Yeah, it’s different. It’s different than most teams. So we’re going to have to utilize more of our athletes and our players more.”
David, I know it got called back, but that big play where you ended up in the endzone. Did that give you, like, an idea of, like you guys are close to getting this thing going?
“S**t, I hope so. It’s week six. Honestly, we wish we could have that one back, but at the end of the day, we won that game. So as a team, what happened? Me, I got to control my mind a little bit.”
The runoff and sway was clicking, it seemed, last weekend, and you were a big part of that blocking. So how difficult will it be to just maintain that this weekend and going forward?
“We’re the Browns. I feel like past couple of years we took it upon ourselves to be more physical and it’s the ‘want to’ aspect. If you want to block, you will. That’s just how I see it so, that’s just how I feel.”
And what do you attribute to your continued improvement at that part of your game?
“I give it to my coach, TC (McCartney), that’s my guy. Definitely got – the chemistry of each other. Got a lot better in terms of just, like, knowing how to talk to each other, knowing how to improve on both sides. So I feel like just the mindset and great coaching.”
You guys played a lot of home games early already, played a big portion of your home schedule already. Now you got to spend a lot of time on the road going forward here. How do you guys bring it on the road the way you do it?
“To me, it doesn’t matter where we play. Obviously we love the fans, the Dawg Pound is second to none. And I’m sure we’ll see a lot of fans in Indy but, we’re there to win.”
TC was talking about how like, with the tight ends, as a unit, you guys are always playing more off the ball. So, as a unit, how do you guys go about that? Just knowing there will be times where you get those passes, but you guys can kind of affect off the ball. In games, how do you approach that?
“It doesn’t really matter, at the end of the day. Whatever play we call, it’s our job to execute, and that’s just what it is.”
Defense is starting to get a lot of national love after their performance. How much fun is it to watch them play? And does that energy rub off on the rest of the team?
“Defense, playing at such a high level right now just encourages the offense to play that much better. They’re going crazy, and it’s so much fun to watch. So, we’re excited about some things.”
